John McCain's East River Tour

John McCain is taking a ferry ride down the East River from New York City to Highland, New Jersey tomorrow. Sounds like a great photo op, no?

Turns out, McCain's tour will pass a series of landmarks he opposed funding for or even voted against.

McCain voted to kill an amendment expressing a sense of Congress that the EPA should move swiftly to clean up river and ocean sites around nation that have been contaminated with DDT, PCBs, dioxins, metals and other toxic chemicals in order to protect public health, safety, and environment. McCain Voted Against $10 Billion In Funding For State Clean Water Grants. McCain Knows The US Has Work To Do In Port Security... “Well, one of our participants just here said ‘port security’ and we obviously have a lot of work to do here and all across America in every one of our ports.” [CNN Live Feed (Houston, TX), 3/4/08]

...But Called the Scrutiny of the Ports Deal “Hysteria.” McCain, speaking to ABC News on February 26, 2006, said that national security concerns surrounding the proposed port sale to Dubai should not be a priority, and he commented that his colleagues had reached a unwarranted level of “near hysteria” about the sale. McCain said, “I think that our priorities this week have been misplaced… We've got some very, very big issues that I think are perhaps more important than whether a country that's freer than China is should have control of some of our terminals.” McCain added, “I think that the near hysteria about this is not warranted particularly in light of the other major crises that we are facing throughout the world.” [ABC News, 2/26/05]

And McCain Has Repeatedly Voted Against Increasing Port Security.
***McCain Voted Against Legislation Allocating $4.1 Billion To Enhance Homeland Security. McCain voted against considering legislation to provide resources and tools needed to develop policies to "Real Security" for Americans. The legislation would appropriate $4.1 billion to implement 9/11 Commission recommendations to provide adequate resources for first responders, improve intelligence oversight, strengthen Congressional oversight of homeland security, and strengthen public diplomacy and improve tracking of nuclear weapons material. ***McCain Voted Against $965 Million For Port Inspectors, Security Grants, And New Technologies. McCain voted against an amendment to provide $965 million for port security and assumes that $100 million will be used for 400 additional inspectors, $600 million for the Port Security Grants program, $100 million for research and development, $105 million for dual technologies, $50 million for new technologies in developing countries, and $10 million for new technologies integration; provides $965 million for debt reduction; and offsets by closing corporate tax loopholes. McCain Voted Against Providing Resources For Transportation Security, And Including $45 Million For Devices To Detect Explosives And $70 Million For Port Security Technologies. McCain voted against an amendment to increase spending on research and development on transportation security to $200 million. Of that amount, $45 million would be earmarked for development of explosive detection devices and $70 million would be earmarked for grants awarded by the secretary of Homeland Security to private and public entities for the development of port security technologies.
