Democrats Make College More Affordable for AAPI Families

September 20, 2007

The Democratic Congress yesterday sent landmark legislation to the President that reduces college costs for millions of young people. The Democratic National Committee and College Democrats of America praised Congressional Democrats and highlighted the bills benefits for Asian American and Pacific Islander families and students:

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, DNC Vice Chair Rep. Mike Honda (CA-15), DNC APIA Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong and College Democrats of America APIA Caucus Chair Suchita Shah issued the following statement:

"We are proud that Democrats are delivering on their promise to make college affordability and access to higher education a priority for all Americans. This historic legislation is especially important in that for the first time it creates a special designation for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)-colleges and universities. While Republicans let efforts to address AAPI institutions languish for years, the new Democratic Congress has acted swiftly to increase opportunity for the AAPI community.

"This legislation will also make college more affordable and accessible to low and middle income students and their families, allowing more Americans to achieve the American dream. Democrats believe that everyone should have access to an affordable college education and that we should continue to invest in our future in order to build a work force that can compete in this global and diverse economy."
