What else can I say. I have a smile on my face.
We just can't take this for granted, though; these wins came from alot of hard work and determination... two things we'll have to continue to demostrate as democrats to sweep again next year.
These election night victories are a testament to the resonance of the New Democratic Party with people from the heart of Blue America, New Jersey, to the reddest of red America in Virginia. In one of the first southern states to turn Republican since the Southern Strategy Tim Kaine's progressive values have proven victorious in Virginia. May both he and Jon Corzine be blessed by our Almighty King Jesus as they lead their respective states.
This is a great night for Democrats. I have to add that I am a student at the University of Scranton in PA and we had a big win for Mayor Chris Doherty against his republican challenger.
I am so thankful that the citizens of Virginia did not make another major mistake. I hope this is a sign of things to come. Congrads Honorable Governor Elect Kaine: We salute you.
Next stop for us in VA…the senate race!
I am so proud of Tim Kaine!!
My 17 year old son and I have been working for our Democratic challenger to the Virginia House of Delegates. Bruce Roemmelt was not expected to get more than 37% of the vote in our very Republican district - he got 46%, even though his was not a targeted race! He plans to try again in 2007 - my husband and I will both work for him next time and we will be more involved.
My son gained some very important things from this campaign. He learned the importance of voting, the political process, and what it is like to work on a campaign (as well as an A on his Government class project and a letter of recommendation for college). He is very proud of what he did to help.
I think the reason that Leslie Byrne did not win for Lt. Gov. is that she assumed that she would carry Northern Virginia and did not spend any money there. While I was working the poll this afternoon, I had several people ask me who was running for Lt. Governor. They never heard ANYTHING from either Byrne or Bolling. Leslie Byrne had represented Fairfax County in the Va House of Delegates, as State Senator and as their Congresswoman to the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, few people (other than political junkies) west of Fairfax County had any idea of who she is. It's too bad that her campaign assumed she had all of Northern Virginia locked up.
Kim
How come CNN (seems like they are yet another repug mouthpiece these days) mentioned that the Dems "just clung to their governers seats?
And... The papers, analysts, blogs etc are all complimenting him for running a positive campaign.
This is a great day for Democrats!
Congratulations Virginia!
It is about time we got something going! I'm happy. Now lets really crank it up and lets get congress back. And lets get Hillary back in the White House where she belongs. We can beat these guys!
I'm happy this about the election results. I live in Mississippi and am hoping to see the same result in our upcoming elections to get rid of Haley Barbour. The trick I think is convincing southerners not to fall for Republican myths, like thier government can function without taxes, that deficits don't matter, that there is an infinate supply of oil and that we should praise the poor gas companies for having to suffer and make us pay 4 dollars a gallon. Also as we can see in France it's not a good idea to privitize the planet and ignore the lower class for the sake of the rich. If the Republicans couldn't use race as a weapon in the south, they might never win another election.
The Bush White House is now planning a propaganda blitz to cover-up its incompetencies and ethical bankruptcy.
We as Democrats have to counter each of their propaganda and lies rapidly and consistently.
Bill O'Reilly has given a new justification for the Iraq War. It is all the fault of France that Junior decided to spend the troops to war.
The problem with this radical right wing administration and their mouth pieces in the media is they will never accept responsibility for their failures. The fault is always somebody elses.
The main stream media is finally standing up to the intimidation of the radical right wing. The fundamental foundations of this great democracy are at stake here. It sure is heartening to see the citizens responding at the polls and the main stream media understanding their responsibility and questioning the lies from the current White House.
It is time for the Democratic Party to stand up to its core values and proudly lead. People are naturally drawn to strong leadership. Winning the congress and the presidency will rest on Democrats' willingness to standup, presenting concrete policies, making real promises to the American people (and have the backbone to deliver them!).
In the current atmosphere of leadership disarray, Democratic leaders need to come up with a complete, clear policy platform that they can present to the American people. They should be able to say, "Give us the Congress in 2006 and the Presidency in 2008, we will deliver you on these promises!"
Simply attacking the Republicans can get the president's number down but it won't win us the congress nor the presidency. Great leaders make bold promises, act on their promises and deliver! We need leaders like that to truly win. I see great things coming for our party.
Let's follow the success of Sen. Jon Corzine and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine today and start realizing our vision for America.
Great victories for Democrats- we need to stay focused on real issues and be ready for 2006
Off to 2006 then! I can't wait to see the day the Republicans loose control of both houses of Congress. This marks the beginning of the end of Republican domination and meddling. We will win big next year, and in 2008 we will take the Presidency! Good work to those who made it possible!
This is the beginning of a wonderful year for Democrats.I am excited,Far-rightwingers have already started blogging about "pretending" this means nothing.I kid you not.I saw it on redstate.org As soon as it was understood that we slammed them in Virginia, one blogger wrote and I quote,
"Is it time to start spinning...
...that this loss isn't such a big deal? "
This is classic right-wingers in the raw.It was halariously amazing. We are gonna take back the Congress,The Senate,The States,Districts and The White House.....No,theres no joke about screaming either.LOL.

Rhydian,
You must concentrate on showing pictures of abandoned people by Bush and FEMA, for a week during Katrina, and how Republicans don't care about the poor. Connecting Barbour to Bush and Republicans should be your focus.
Wow US1,
The election don't mean nothin' cuz its a northeast liberal thing? So Virginia, which if my memory serves me right, is not in the south, and not a stronghold of Christian Coalition/ Moral Majority types? And if you think the Republicans are gaining in 06 you need to sober up, and check the numbers in those districts.
The Republicans already hold all of the competetive districts after 02, because of the "you're either with us, or with the terrorists" and then in 04 the support the war, don't change a horse in midstream. In 06, the debate is going to be on Corruption, Lies, Incompetence and the Need for change, new ideas; I still like Buzz's Strong Families, Strong Communities, Strong Nation (alright I sourced it once, under Bush / three year old logic it is now mine.) The ads will feature DeLay, Abramoff, & Frist with bags of loot, Iraq war Bush Administration Fantasy statements juxtaposed with CIA or Army reality based statements, Katrina pictures with Grover Norquists bathtub analogy and Brownie's e-mails, and then a National ad blitz on the specific things we believe in.
The winds of change has started on the East Coast...let us blow it across the nation and bring back dignity and honesty to our government.
I am surprised that no one in the press has really mentioned one of the huge reasons that Virginia won the governorship by a BIG margin...the rapidly changing demographic in Northern Virginia. It is getting very progressive, and that is why we won! People talk about Northern Virginia being out of step with the rest of Virginia...actually, I think that the rest of Virginia is out of step with Northern Virginia.
I am a Northern Virginian, and I have to say that I am so proud of the commonwealth today. We are showing that we are not the same old "red state" anymore. The tactics that might fly in the rest of the south will not be tolerated here anymore.
In Kaine's speech last night, one of my favorite things that he said was that we have proved that (and I paraphrase) "faith in God is not just for the Republicans, it is for everyone." Kaine opposes the death penalty for religious reasons, and the Republicans tried to rip his beliefs to shreds. In the end, Virginia decided that they respected Tim Kaine. Comparing Tim Kaine to Hitler was absolutly shameful, but in the end, it helped us. Virginians will no longer tolerate these kinds of attacks.
I am proud to be an American and a Virginian, and may God bless both!
One more thing...as I watched Mark Warner give his speech last night, it occured to me that not only is he fantastic, but I really think he can win in 2008! Virginians LOVE him, and I think he would carry the state, and maybe other southern states as well. WARNER 2008!!!!
Congrats fellow Democrats for a job well done in Virginia and New jersey.Lets keep the momentum going by electing Demrocrats in all States and sending a strong message to all of those incompetent morons who call themselves Republicans!
And let us not forget California. The "all Braun" Governor lost big time with all his Propositions. This was the Governor the radical right was propping up for Presidential run 2008 and were talking about a constitutional amendment to allow citizens not born in this country to run for President.
Now, his re-election bid in 2006 as Governor is on shaky ground.
It is time to remind the so called moderates on both sides of the aisle and the red state democrats of 2006 as they get ready to vote on Alito.
Defeat of the Alito nomination needs to become the rallying theme for the Democrats. Alito, or any darling of the radical right wing, needs to be defeated. This country cannot afford a activist right wing justice on the court.
Hooah! It's a good start. I think that the Dem lockdown of the senate in order to get the ball rolling on finding out what really happened prior to the start of the debacle in Iraq, and the current fight over the budget have a lot to do with it. We need to keep encouraging Dem politicians to keep fighting Repub inroads into our government and our freedoms.
I'm glad that we ended up winning in Virginia and New Jersey, but I think at the same time, Democrats need to realize that our wins, though significant, weren't THAT huge. A HUGE win in my opinion is when an election is won with well over a 10% margin. We won Virginia by 5%; and I think "swing state" status is given to states where elections are won with 2-3% win margins. We shouldn't get TOO excited, although we should happy for getting the "W" anyways. In New Jersey, a pretty liberal northeastern state, a 10% win margin is a insult; we should have won by much more than that. One reason this may have happened was because many people saw little difference between moderate Forrester and liberal Corzine.
The second point I want to bring up is that we didn't "win back" New Jersey or Virginia. Democrats held the governor offices in those states the previous 4 years as well. If anything, we got lucky and retained our seats. If we win in a place like Arkansas and unseat Huckabee, or in California and unseat Arnold, then we have much more reason to be excited.
Overall, I'm proud of the party's efforts and look forward to seeing some more gains in local offices all across the country. Good job to everyone who campaigned for Kaine and Corzine!

Congratulations on our victory of those Democratic governors of Virginia and New Jersey. It is, in no way, time to celebrate. This is just a start, the tip of the iceberg on what we must do to really restore integrity in government. This means continuing to go into the urban areas, rural areas (where the rich people do not dare to walk in the grass, the mud, etc.), the college campuses where the future of our students is affected, all 50 states in having candidates on the ballot for every office, and so on. Let us work to make our victories landslides over the Republicans.
Chijioke
Go Dems!! Now we need some kind of Contract With America that says we will restore honesty and descency to Government! Have our members running for office take a pledge that if they are ever under a cloud of wrong doing that looks legitimate, they agree to resign or be thrown out by their peers. There is nothing wrong with being honest while serving this country!!! No politician should be afraid to sign such a pledge if they are truly honest!!
It's great that we took a few tough states.
I also think its a god sign that Bush's 11th hour endorsement failed to help the Republican candidate.
I feel it's important in the future elections that the Democrats enforce and reinforce their views on Christianity. The Republicans have because synonymous with Christianity, when this is completely false. There are many Christians in the Democratic Party, it's just that we're focused on the positivity of religion. Not crying out to the far right strict conservitism.
If we can establish that religion is a big factor in the Democratic party we will have no problems reclaiming government once again.
Whether you believe in religion or not, it's whats going to get the votes.
Good Job people. Keep up the good work.
This was a good start to the '06 election year. My happiness is bittersweet in that I live in District 4 of California and my county/district attempted to pass all of arnold's "Girly Man" initiatives.
Living in california's district 4 with John Doolittle as our House Rep (yes he's the creep who had all those "Golden Hammer" pins made for the Repug's in congress) means we have a LONG road ahead of us to oust the right wing zealots who blindly follow Delay/Frist into the darkness.
Bring on '06!!!
Congrats to Corzine and Kaine and their states for just the start of a swinging momentum toward our party. This is just a preview of what we will be seeing in 2006 and 2008. Let's start to show America how well we can lead. Thanks to all the hard work for those involved in campaigning for these elections. I will do my part to make sure Daniels is defeated in 08 back in here in Indiana
I am in va, newport news to be exact. the dem ticket got 55% of the vote here. we used the dnc model to get off year non-voters to the polls. it worked.
A special congratulations to the voters of Dover, Delaware who sent all Republican school board members packing for trying initiate "intelligent design" curriculums in their schools!
All eight Republicans were replaced by Democrats.
congradulations to both new govs.as a pro life Demo, i am especially proud of Kaine/.
I just want to weigh in on the election of Lt. Gov Tim Kaine in Virginia. Tim pulled in 74.24% of the vote in Arlington County; no surprise there, but he also won big in the outer suburbs of Northern VA, partially because of changing demographics. Democratic candidates Caputo and Poisson both defeated right-wingers for seats in the House of Delegates. These victories, along with two other newcomers David Bulova and Dave Marsden in this area are HUGE. The Republican anti-immigrant sentiment also backfired and encouraged us to vote. I would like to think that we, new Americans in Northern Virginia, played a large role in Tim's victory.
I am finally a proud californian! This week successful Election results is the only solution for the state. Arnold's 15 minutes of fame are up and we will replace him in 2006! Next is Bush, and bring back our troops now! Oh by the way! Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Pearl Wolfowiitz all goe to jail for lieing to the American people about the need to invade Iraq!
What a great day, however let's remember the Former Governors of these states were also Democrats! It's time to raid some Republican states!!!!! We also need to make sure we get ULTRA Conservative Rick Santorum out of the Senate, he is the #3 ranking Republican. I encourage you all from Pennsylvania to volunteer for the Bob Casey campaign. Please visit the website listed for more information.
Thanks!
Dover voted out all 7 Republicans in their school board; the 7 who supported Creationism as a science. And Pat Robertson, the man who got Bush through the Presidential primaries in 2000 has informed the people of Dover, they have voted against God and there will be retribution for that for the city of Dover.
Pat Robertson's audience is the Republican base today. His warning shows how fundamentalist he is and how much respect he has for the democratic process of election.
I live near Dover PA and do my shopping there. This is small town America. Shame on Pat Robertson for once again trying to use Bush tactics to instill fear in people. Religion is personal - between you and the man upstairs. I've always been taught that if you repent, Gob will forgive. This is just one more good reason why religion (intelligent design) has no place in our schools. If we let one belief in, we must let in all beliefs. What's next, intelligent design evolves from whales?
